A teenage couple drowned in a Smethwick canal in what police call a tragic accident.

Mohammed Fayz Uddin, 18, of Hanson Close and Sara Rylance, 17, were pulled out of the canal by emergency services at Smethwick Locks at 7.20pm on 27th October.

Mr Uddin’s uncle went to the canal to see the scene for himself and told the Birmingham Mail that his family urged the tragic teenager not to go.

He said: “He was a really nice kid. They had warned him against going out because of trouble in the area.

“He was just meant to go out for five minutes – those were the last minutes of his life as it turns out. His mum called him later on but all she got was an answer phone.”

Mohammed, known as Fayz by friends and family, was a Halesowen College student and had planned to do an apprenticeship, helping out in a restaurant in his spare time.

Sara was a student at George Salter Academy in West Bromwich.

According to reports, crews joined fire fighters and police to locate two people who had reportedly fallen into the canal.

Once the couple were discovered, they were given advanced life support at the scene

They were then taken to hospital, but were pronounced dead a short while later.

The police are currently trying to discover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
