Brummie world champion Kal Yafai will defend his WBA Super Flyweight title in his hometown of Birmingham on May 13th 2017. Yafai became Birmingham’s first ever world champion and he has huge plans to unify the Super Flyweight division as he joins Roman Gonzalez at the top of the 115lb division. With no opponent confirmed, Yafai has promised fans to issue a warning to all the top Super Flyweight champions and contenders by defending his title in style.

Hosted at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, promoter Eddie Hearn showered Yafai with praise saying; ‘On December 10th a star was born, he took a two-weight world champion to school and made history as the first champion from Birmingham.’ On the event, Hearn promises a huge and exciting event in Brum, adding; ‘We have some outstanding fighters from the midlands and fight fans must save this date in their diaries for our biggest fight night yet in the second city.’

The fight will be televised on Sky Sports and Yafai will be on the main event in which will surely be an exciting card set up by Matchroom Boxing Promotions. Honoured to kick start his reign in his hometown, the 27 year old stated; ‘It’s a dream come true to be topping the bill in Birmingham as champion, winning the title in Manchester was amazing, but Birmingham is the place i want to fight and to turn the Barclaycard Arena into my fortress.’Image 2

So far Yafai’s dream has come true, but this title defence is crucial for his career and winning is the only option if he is serious about dominating that 115lb division.
