Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK has been seeking to verify information in very difficult circumstances. We believe the information provided here is accurate.
Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK unequivocally condemns all violence and all human rights violations. People of all ethnicities and all religions in Rakhine State have the right to live in peace without fear.
Earlier this month the Rohingya Consultative Body was formed, bringing together Rohingya leaders around the world. As we stated at the time: “The participants agreed that the indigenous Rohingya people of Arakan should continue to adhere to non-violence in striving for full citizenship rights and ethnic rights in Myanmar.”
Following the attacks on security forces 25th August, the military have launched clearance operations against Rohingya villages the same as in 2016, but on a larger scale. The military is systematically clearing villages, destroying all structures, including homes, shops and businesses, leaving nothing for people to return to.
We have confirmed the deaths of more than 700 people but believe the real figure is higher.
We have confirmed at least 6,000 homes have been burned down.
“The military are deliberately targeting civilians, killing unarmed people, even women and children,” said Tun Khin, President of Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK. “The situation is even more dangerous that in 2016, with the government deliberately inciting tensions and hatred. There is no leader or government official in Burma who is trying to calm the situation. Only international pressure can save the Rohingya now. The United Nations Security Council must meet and pressure the government and military to stop these attacks and stop inciting hatred and violence.”
