As we enter the festive period, the news has been dominated by the government’s controversial cuts to tax credits. It was heart wrenching to see the plight of one mother on Newsnight as she spoke against these savage cuts.
This is the money used to support low income families to survive, and the government was adamant to go ahead with this policy until a historical decision was taken by Liberal Democrat and Labour Peers to delay this very unpopular and unethical policy.
The reality is that cutting tax credits will make the poor poorer whilst the Conservatives at the same time are giving the richest inheritance tax cuts. There is awful sense of déjà vu sweeping through the Conservative party; are we seeing the return of Thatcherism?
What the chancellor seems to forget that this is about people’s lives on low waged income. They are doing the right thing by working, but the Chancellor plans to reduce their income- it isn’t fair. Thankfully, the sense of compassion and care still exist in one house of the parliament.
November is also the month in which we remember both World Wars and the conflicts since.
Remembrance Sunday is to remember the heroic efforts, achievements and the sacrifices made not only by British service men and women but also the huge contribution made by many hundreds of thousands of troops from the Commonwealth.
People from all faiths and none fought together, many ultimately killed or wounded in action. It is important that we continue to remember their tremendous contribution and their sacrifices must never be forgotten.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone celebrating Diwali, A very happy Diwali and prosperous new year on behalf of the Liberal Democrats.
