Curry King Abdul Salam, who ended up in the Guinness Book of Records in 2005 after cooking the world’s biggest curry, is handing over the reins to his youngest son, Massum. The Bangladeshi restaurateur, who has been in charge at the award-winning Eastern Eye in Lichfield for 25 years, is taking a back seat role as chef to allow his student son to run the business. Massum is to combine his studies at Birmingham City University, where he is working towards a degree in Business and Management, with running the Eastern Eye. The Lichfield restaurant recently underwent a major refurbishment, and Massum is hoping the fresh image will pull in new customers. “I saw that the restaurant needed a younger look to give it a kick, and because of my business studies background, I realized that I could help my dad. “I will be trying very hard to follow in my father’s footsteps. “He is a hard act to follow, as he is so well-known. “Since I was five years old, I used to jump into my dad’s car and come to the restaurant. “The Eastern Eye has been a big part of my life. “It will be great to have my dad in the background to make sure that the food is spot on.”Abdul, aged 53, said: “I am very proud of Massum. “It will be good to work with him after all these years.”
