Detectives have arrested a Birmingham man on suspicion of theft after CCTV was circulated of a man attempting to conceal a sculpture in his clothing.
The CCTV footage was broadcast nationally showing the thief leaving Castle Fine Art Gallery in Birmingham with the artwork under his arm on Sunday 17 August. Staff challenged the man after he left and he returned the piece and walked off.
The footage was released in a bid to trace the offender and as a result the 41-year-old was arrested this morning (19 September) from his home address in Small Heath on suspicion of the theft. He is currently assisting officers with their inquiries.
The artwork is a limited edition sculpture by Nic Joly commemorating WWI, sales of which are raising money for the Royal British Legion. The sculpture in question has now been sold.
