Sri Lankan tourism officials have set up a profile page on a Chinese social networking website in a bid to bring more tourists to their country.
Featuring a “Refreshing Sri Lanka: Wonder of Asia” logo, the page was set up on the website Renren on 21 November in order to attract Chinese tourists.
Rumy Jaufer, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s managing director, told Xinhua News Agency, “As the booming economy of China has led to a creation of a rich middle class and extensive per capita spending, targeting the Chinese travel market would be an ideal opportunity for Sri Lanka.”
Mr Jaufer also added that the island inhabitants were denied entry into many countries due to ethnic conflicts, but hopes that the “ambitious” move of creating a Renren page will increase tourism in Sri Lanka.
More than117 million users have accounts on Renren, which models itself on Facebook.
According to CNN, only a handful of updates have been shared, including one to recruit Chinese interns to the country.
Since its activation last month, the page has only attracted a few fan, but Mr Jaufer assures that Sri Lanka, with the help of Chinese tour agencies, have applied an array of programs to target the broad tourist base in China.
