Qatar has named an avenue in Doha after Libyan politician Omar Mukhtar who, for almost 20 years, led a resistance against Italian colonization of Libya in the 19th centaury.

The ceremony at Al Dafna, Dohan’s new business district, was attended by relatives of the hero Emir, Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, as well as Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the Libyan Transitional National Council.

“We are grateful to Qatar for all the outstanding things it has done in favour of the Libyans and we shall always recall their stances with pride and gratitude,” Jamal Al Gahzali, the grandson of Omar Mukhtar told the Qatari daily Al Sharq.

Omar Mukhtar was born in 1862 and led native resistance against the Italian invasion in 1911, when Libya was part of the Ottoman Empire.

His legacy is remains, for his face appears on the Libyan ten-dinar bill.
