The 17 year old, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to killing Nitin Garg in aMelbournepark in January 2010, which provoked tension betweenAustraliaandIndia.
The attack was amongst many others against Indian foreigners, which sparked anger inIndiawith many branding the incidents as racist violence.
Mr Garg, who graduated with an accountancy degree, was stabbed numerous times as he walked to work.
The teenage student tried to steal his mobile phone and in court, he admitted the charges of murder and attempted robbery.
The crime was described as opportunist, rather than racist by a court judge.
Judge Paul Coghlan said that Mr Garg was an “innocent victim” and there was little evidence to show that the attack was racially motivated.
However, the student will be able to be paroled in eight years.
