Malkit Singh will grace Birmingham’s ‘Walk of Stars’

Birmingham singer Malkit Singh is to become to first Asian music act to be given a place on the city’s Walk of Stars.

The King of Bhangra will be awarded the honour on 10 May at Gatecrasher, Broad Street, for his global contribution to bhangra music.

Punjab-born Singh has lived in Birmingham since 1984 and worked in a denim factory before pursuing his star-studded dreams.

“I am extremely delighted to receive this honour,” the singer told reporters.

Although bhangra music originated in Punjab, India, it was in Birmingham that it was recognised and has since become popular amongst all communities throughout the UK.”

Broad Street events manager Nichole Samuels added, “Malkit Singh is a global sensation and his music has transcended to people of all ages and cultures.

“I am proud that his contribution to bhangra music will be officially acknowledged on our golden mile.”

Singh will perform at the event, where he will be presented with the award by Birmingham’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Anita Ward.

Some of the stars featured on the Walk of Stars include Black Country comic Lenny Henry, Slade frontman Noddy Holder, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommo and actress Julie Walters.

Singh was named as the best-selling bhangra solo artist in the world in the Millennium edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.
