Birmingham’s, wedding venue, Al Miraj is scheduled to reopen after its ceiling collapsed on 200 guests, including school children in 2017.

The ceiling at Al Miraj, which is situated on Wordsworth Road, Small Heath, had collapsed on school children who were attending their end of year presentation in July 2017.

Six people were injured, including three school children, when the ceiling collapsed on unsuspecting guests at the lavish banqueting suite.

Ambulances and paramedics arrived at the scene and treated the six people who were later discharged.

40 firefighters, including a special team, arrived at the banqueting suite and worked together to stabilise the building.

The venue remained closed since the collapse, while renovation work was being carried out, as a spokesman for Al Miraj said that there were plans to reopen the venue by the summer.

He said: “We are carrying out renovation work at the venue at the moment and we are aiming to be open by the summer. The legal case against the builder responsible for work to the ceiling is ongoing.”

During the time of the incident, venue director Gaus Uddin said that he was thankful that nobody was seriously injured.

He said: “We heard a noise and saw the suspending ceiling coming down. People started running out of the room.

“A young girl hurt herself with glass and was taken to hospital but she was later released, and an older man received a minor injury as he made his way out.

“I am thankful to God no-one was badly hurt.

“I admit it could have been much more serious.”

Gaus Uddin said that he had brought the venue in 2016 and paid a building firm to make improvements to the hall, including a suspended ceiling.
