A study of data by UK travel retailer Holiday Hypermarket has found that travellers from the Midlands are flocking to Mexico more than any other destination, with the number of bookings from the region increasing by 293% from last year.

While visitors from the North stayed flat and the South increased by 34% from 2014 levels, it seems that Midlanders have been thoroughly won over by regions such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Overall, this helped push the total number of bookings to the country up by 13.5% year on year.

Mexico has been rising in popularity as a tourist destination for several years now: in the first half of 2014, the number of international visitors showed an increase of 2.8% on the same period of the previous year. Visitors from the UK increased by 3%.

Last year, Mexico was the 2nd most visited country in both North and South America combined. Mexico was also the 10th most visited place by international tourists.

“We’re not sure why Mexico is so popular with Midlanders right now, but there’s no doubt that it’s a great destination for holidaymakers seeking cultural experiences, great food and lots of sunshine,” says Ian Crawford, Marketing Manager at Holiday Hypermarket.

“We’ve been seeing a lot more Mexican-themed bars and restaurants pop up over the past few years, and maybe that’s encouraged people to consider a destination that might not otherwise have been on their radar.”
