A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Smethwick last week (3 Sept).

The teenager is the second person to be arrested in connection with the death of Glynis Bensley, who was found on Cheshire Street just before 11.50pm last Wednesday.

Ms Bensley was pronounced dead by medical staff at the scene. A post mortem examination was carried out on Friday which confirmed that the 47-year-old, who lived locally, had died as a result of a head injury.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at an address in the area on Thursday afternoon (4 Sept) and was released on conditional police bail the following day.

The second teen visited a Sandwell police station last night and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He will be questioned over Ms Bensley’s death today.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Ridding is leading the murder inquiry. She said: “We are working through all of the information we have received to date to determine Glynis’ last movements and what led to her tragic death.

“We have now arrested a second suspect and he will be questioned over her murder.

“Our thoughts remain with Glynis’ family and friends who are obviously devastated by what has happened and specially trained officers are working with them at this time.

“We continue to appeal to anyone who was in the Cheshire Road area last Wednesday night to contact us on either 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
