Police join forces with school children to teach parents a lesson in road safety.

Police officers from Sutton Coldfield police station have called in back-up from a local primary school to help them tackle concerns about road safety.

Pupils from New Oscott Primary school have been enlisted to help the Sutton Vesey neighbourhood policing team to reduce reports of inconsiderate parking outside their school.

As part of this safety campaign officers held a competition and invited the school children to design their own posters to remind motorists about key safety messages, including why cars should not park on the zig-zags or block pavements outside the school.

PCSO Jack Evans was so impressed with the school children’s work that he approached local Councillor Malcolm Cornish and Birmingham City Council to transform the posters into banners.

The banners, including messages such as ‘Your car is big but I am tiny, please park safely so you can see me’, will now be displayed outside the school to act as a further reminder to motorists dropping off and picking up pupils.

PCSO Evans said: “At the beginning and end of the school day inconsiderate parking can be a problem. Not only does it compromise the safety of children and other road users but it can also cause disruption and frustration for local residents and businesses.

“We have enforcement options available to us but we are always keen to educate motorists about the dangers of parking on zig-zags and pavements.

“So we asked the children if they could help us to spread the safety messages by coming up with their own designs for safety posters.”
