Christmas came early for Pushkar with its first ever British Curry Award win at the 11th annual British Curry Awards on Monday 30th November at Battersea Evolution, London. The fine dining Indian restaurant based on Birmingham’s Broad Street was one of 11 restaurants to be shortlisted in the Best Restaurant Midlands category.

Dubbed the ‘Curry Oscars’, the British Curry Awards honoured the unsung heroes behind the UK’s favourite dish. The black tie awards ceremony was attended by the greats of the curry industry such as Enam Ali MBE (also the Founder of the British Curry Awards) and a few famous faces; GBBO runner-up Tamal Ray, Citizen Khan star Adil Ray, Presenter Stephen Mulhern, Actor Nitin Ganatra , BBC Asian Network’s Noreen Khan, as well as the Prime Minister, David Cameron, via video message, and many others. The event was hosted by BBC newsreader, Jane Hill.

With approximately 25 million curries being consumed each week, the British Curry Awards has become a key fixture on the UK social calendar, lauded as a national institution in its own right as the first and landmark event to celebrate the industry’s achievements. The nomination process invited members of the public to nominate their favourite curry restaurant for a deserving accolade. This year, a phenomenal 218,000 public nominations were received via post, app and online, from diners nominating their favourite curry restaurants, with 2,459 restaurants being nominated.

Pushkar’s Creative Director, Rai Singh, was delighted with the award: “We’re absolutely over the moon to have won our first British Curry Award. We are always proud to represent Birmingham and the Midlands. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us through the years and we could not have done this without the amazing team behind Pushkar. I’d also like to congratulate Pushkar’s younger sibling restaurant Praza on being a finalist in the ‘Best Newcomer’ category.” Comment ends.
