According to new figures, 10 million British people alive today are set to live until they are 100 years old.

Despite there being just 15,000 centenarians alive today, the population aged 90 and over has grown more rapidly than other age groups in recent years – with one in six Britons now expected to reach triple figures.

The revolutionary findings have prompted the Government to invest over £300m in developing the technologies needed to support an ageing population with Ministers saying that they need to “revolutionise” the ways in which people get older, ensuring that they remain healthier and independent for a longer amount of time.

The products of the investments are set to include the developments of innovative diagnostic tools, medical products and treatments, regional centres, genome sequencing and healthy ageing programmes – all aiming to help people live healthily and in their own homes for longer.
