The Government will introduce face-to-face interviews for British visa applicants to weed out those who lie in their forms.

New language tests are being introduced in British visa applications, after border checks suggested that 40 per cent of Pakistani students applying for a visa were lying.

Home Secretary Theresa May have announced that Pakistani applicants applying to study in Britain will need to be interviewed face-to-face by officials.

Before the move, the student visa system only required applicants to fill out a form and their ability to speak English was assessed on their written answers.

The decision comes after there was a sharp rise in the number of Pakistani applications.

Around 20 per cent of applicants are rejected every year based on their poor English skills.

But the trial test, which took place in Pakistan last year, found that another 20 per cent do not know the English language as well as they claim, bringing the overall rate to 40 per cent.

Further tests have shown that 38 per cent of students applications in Bangladesh were bogus, with a further 27 per cent from Sri Lanka, 29 per cent from India and 28 per cent from Egypt.

Campaign group Migration Watch said that the move was a victory for its three-year campaign to introduce interviews for all aboard students.

A Government source said: “Britain is open for business to the best and the brightest. But our message to bogus students is clear. You will be found out and you will be stopped from coming.”
