Mobile phone with in-built radiation detector unveiled in Japan

A new mobile phone with an inbuilt radiation detector has been introduced in Japan.

The smartphone was developed by Softbank Corp and is the first to measure radiation exposure by the hour.

Going on sale this summer, the user is able to track the radiation levels of each location.

Founder and President Masayoshi Son told reporters, “The threat from the nuclear accident cannot be seen by the human eye and continues to be a concern for many people, especially for mothers with small children.”

The phone will come of use to those living in Japan, after the March 2011 earthquakes and tsunami provoked the world’s worst nuclear crisis at Fukushima nuclear plant.

Since the incident, there are concerns about the long-term effects of the radiation contamination of the atmosphere, sea, soil and food chains.

The smartphone will be available in eight different colours, containing hi-tech radiation reading chips.
