Little boy and his grandparents have spent a year in jail because proving that they are Indian Nationals has taken a long time to confirm.  

A five-year-old boy and his grandparents are trapped in a Bangladeshi jail for entering the country without valid travel documents.

Artful Haq Seikh and his 55-year-old grandfather Hasim Uddin Seikh and grandmother Maforza Khatun, 50, have been in Kushtia jail for a year.

Their two month sentenced ended 10 months ago, but they have not been released.

The family of three are originally from the Murshidabad district inIndia’sWest Bengalstate.

They came to Bangladeshon 15th April last year to visit relatives in Daulatpur, but were arrested for lacking formal travel documents.

A month after they were arrested and sent to jail, they were given a two month jail term.

They then began the process to verify themselves as Indian Nationals, but the procedure has taken a long time to complete.

The jailor wrote to the Inspector General of Police, who forwarded the letter to the Home Minister.

The letter was them sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who then contacted Indian authorities.

New Delhiresponded, but the confirmation process took a year to complete and on 15th April, the Home Minister told the jail authorities to take action.

The Border GuardBangladeshhas contactedIndia’s Border Security Force at Nadia inWest Bengal.

The two organisations have agreed that a meeting will take place for 29th April.

A BSF official told the media, “We are hopeful that BSF will take the boy and his grandparents back during the meeting.”
