Many of the deaths took place in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

Elderly people and the homeless were particularly hit.

India’s Supreme Court ordered the states in question to provide night shelters for the homeless in order to prevent more deaths from happening.

Sub-zero temperatures hit Kashmir, with heavy fog and cold winds disturbing life throughout the northern part of the country.

According to reports, 11 people died in Punjab, while two passed away in Uttar Pradesh.

Schools in the state of Bihar were forced to close until Christmas.
