Man jailed after injuring woman on a mobility scooter in collision
A Birmingham man has been jailed for four years after leaving a woman on a mobility scooter with critical injuries in a collision after driving off from a Coventry Road petrol station without paying for fuel earlier this year.

Steven Tucker, 28 from St Margarets Avenue, Ward End admitted causing serious injury through dangerous driving after crashing into the 54-year-old on 18 April before fleeing the scene in a blue Hyundai estate. Tucker was surrounded by members of the public on quad bikes a short distance away until police arrived.

Tucker also pleaded guilty to drink driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and making off without payment at an earlier hearing which saw him sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday (28 August). As well as a custodial sentence, he was also disqualified from driving for ten years.

Detective Sergeant John-Paul Jacob said: “The collision has had a devastating effect on the lady who was injured. Already disabled following a stroke some years ago, she spent three weeks in critical care followed by several months in Solihull Hospital and a care home for rehabilitation.

“Before being injured she lived independently, but now needs additional care and, although she has almost recovered from the physical injuries, the psychological effect is far greater. She is scared to leave the house alone and will have to move closer to her parents for ongoing support as well as additional paid for care.
