A large explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut has killed at least 100 people and injured more than 4000 others, according to the latest media reports. The blast tore through the port area of Beirut and shook the entire city, with a mushroom cloud rising above the devastation in terrifying scenes that emerged following the explosion.
Rescue workers in Lebanon are searching for survivors among the rubble. More than a hundred people are currently missing. In addition to those hurt or killed near the site of the explosion, people further afield have also received devastating injuries from flying glass and debris. There has been an urgent call for blood donations, and the need for medical assistance is critical as many hospitals have been damaged in the explosion.

UK-based international charity, Penny Appeal, held an immediate meeting of its Emergency Panel following the incident. With offices across the world, the charity maintains a strong position to respond to global crises with short notice, putting together comprehensive, integrated responses to address the immediate needs of those affected.

Having launched an immediate Emergency Appeal for the Beirut Emergency, Penny Appeal are coordinating with their charity partners to understand the emergency needs in the area. Penny Appeal will be providing life-saving aid, including blood supplies, medical assistance, and nutrition support to the survivors of the catastrophe. As hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients, they will also be providing urgent medical supplies.

Through a range of humanitarian initiatives, Penny Appeal have been working in Lebanon for a number of years and have a strong understanding of the existing humanitarian situation. The country was already in economic crisis and struggling to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. The catastrophe could have devastating consequences for a country that relies largely upon imports for its food supply, as the port has been severely damaged, and its large stores of grain destroyed. There are fears that there will be widespread food insecurity as a result of this tragedy. Penny Appeal will continue to monitor the situation carefully and apply their expertise as the situation unfolds.

Penny Appeal’s CEO Harris Iqbal says: “We have reports that hospitals in Lebanon are overwhelmed with people suffering from injuries due to the explosion. Many families have lost loved ones and many more are awaiting news of the injured. To add to this, buildings and infrastructure in certain areas across Beirut have been destroyed, making aid work even more difficult. We are speaking to our partners on the ground for the latest information so that we can deliver aid to as many people as possible.”

Penny Appeal is a British Muslim-led charity whose staff and beneficiaries hail from all backgrounds and walks of life. To donate to the Beirut Emergency Appeal, donors can call 03000 11 11 or visit pennyappeal.org/fbo-l-e1
