The UK based charity Penny Appeal, who have seen over a 30% rise in calls to their Domestic Abuse Helpline during the COVID 19 restriction period will be launching an online video campaign titled “Let’s End The Silence” together – across all its social media platformsThe video features a range of people from all walks of life. The video aims to raise awareness of the rise in Domestic Violence during these unprecedented times, it also hopes to encourage members of the public to look out for those who might be in a vulnerable position and highlights the support available to them.

The Let’s End The Silence together - video features a poem written to express how no one should have to tolerate abuse and that society will support those who seek support and help others who want to be heard.

The charity Penny Appeal have managed to enlist various people  (Including a few well-known names) to read out lines from the poem including, students, Influencers, a barrister, fundraisers, wellbeing experts, women’s activists, a businesswoman, an Imam, a poet, a singer, a comedian and Dr Rosena Allin-Khan – MP for Tooting and newly appointed Shadow Minister for Mental Health.

Penny Appeal runs a dedicated Domestic Abuse helpline and takes calls from people hailing from all walks of life. The charity also has specially trained call handlers to deal with cultural sensitivities from callers with BAME backgrounds.

Penny Appeal CEO Harris Iqbal says: “Since the UK lockdown began, domestic abuse cases have increased significantly, With social distancing in place, abuse becomes even harder to detect, we all really need to raise our voices and look out for each other, now more than ever!  The support is out there and no one should have to suffer by themselves so Lets End The Silence together – to make it stop”!

Penny Appeal’s Domestic Abuse Helpline serves both male and female survivors of domestic abuse, aged 18+ nationwide. They operate 7 days a week from 10am to 10pm via 0808 802 3333. Callers can be reassured that there will be no cost to them whatsoever and the number won’t show up on any bills.

 

Anyone who calls Penny Appeal’s Domestic Abuse helpline will be put through to an experienced practitioner, who will talk with each caller for as long as they need. Practitioners will listen and support callers through the challenges they are experiencing, providing necessary support and signposting to specialist services if required. The service can also facilitate access to counsellors with specialist Islamic knowledge.
