A Small Heath man who suffered a serious head injury after being assaulted on Friday, June 1 afternoon, has died in hospital. The 21-year-old had been on a life support machine since the incident just after 2.30pm at the junction Somerville Road and St Oswald’s Road. He was pronounced dead at 3pm on June 6, 2012; a forensic post mortem will take place in due course. West Midlands Police have charged a 15-year-old local lad in connection with the incident. He appeared at Birmingham Youth Court this morning where, after a bail application was refused, he was remanded into a youth offenders’ institute until his next court appearance on June 13. Detective Chief Inspector Sab Johal from West Midlands Police’s Force CID, said: “The 15-year-old has been in court facing a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; we will be liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service to review the situation.” Two other men arrested on Friday night aged 42- and 20-years-old and also from Small Heath have both been released on police bail until a date in July. The 15 years old boy falls under the category of ‘Young offender’ and will probably be sent to Young Offenders Institutions. YOIs were introduced under the criminal justice Act 1988 and are regulated under Young offenders Institutions Rules 2000. Prisoners serving sentences at young offenders’ institutions are expected to take part in at least 25 hours of education per week, which is aimed at helping them to improve their behaviour, to develop practical skills for use in the outside world and to prepare them for lawful employment following their release. There are also opportunities for prisoners to undertake work in Community Service Volunteer programmes.
