A pupil at GeorgeDixonSchoolwas selected as a finalist at this year’s Young Writers Award Ceremony.

Sumaiya Khan’s short story was chosen from thousands of entries nationwide to make the finals at a prestigious ceremony at the London Apollo Theatre, where she met the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla.

The 6-year-old’s work, entitled “The Kingdom of Kindness” is now published as one of many short pieces in a book by the well known author Micheal Morpurgo.

Sumaiya’s parents, who encouraged her natural love of academia, are very proud of their child’s achievement and hope it will encourage others to take greater interest in education.

Sumaiya’s father, Shafaqat Khan said, “Sumaiya is so proud as a young author and is grateful to her teachers Mrs Idriss and Mrs Carter for their support and of course submitting the work.”

The youngster, who attends George Dixon primary school, also spoke of her joy.

“I looked forward to the day and I counted them down. My dad and sister Aleema came with me toLondonon the train.

“Going on stage was more exciting than actually meeting the Duchess of Cornwall!”

Her short story was submitted by class teacher Mrs Hussain, who recognised her potential in literature.

But literature is a path that Sumaiya is less likely to pursue, as the talented girl plans to follow her father’s footsteps as an Herbalist and has grown fond of her mother’s cupcake business.

She said, “I want to grow herbs and bake herbal organic healing cupcakes!”
