Police Officer becomes most highly ranked Ethnically Indian female member of the West Midlands Force

Harvi Khatkar has made history by becoming the first woman of a black and ethnic minority background to be promoted to the position of a superintendent.

The brilliant bobby has been with the policing department for a staggering 25 years. During her career, she has been promoted numerous times. Within the last couple of decades, she has fulfilled a series of roles inclusive of offender management, response, neighbourhood policing and force incident management.

Harvi has worked tirelessly in the west midlands’ neighbouring towns and cities. The areas that she has covered include Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall, Birmingham and Wolverhampton to leave her mark. She was also the Police department’s business crime lead.

Harvi underwent rigorous training and an intense assessment scheme before gaining the position of a new superintendent. Before this, she was the most senior BME police officer in the county before joining the WMP 2020 programme to innovate and modernise policing routines for the future.

Despite her huge success, Harvi remains humble and says it is up to others if they choose to see her as an inspiration. She solely intends to do her policing duty. However, she does hope that her achievements will motivate others to begin the policing career they’ve been aspiring to achieve.

She said: “I do feel a sense of pride at being the first Asian woman to reach the rank of superintendent.

“We are a diverse police force with a range of different cultures so I have no doubt there will be many more women, and men, from a BME background who will continue to rise through the force in future.

“The best thing about being a police officer is no one day is the same; you face varied situations.

“If others see me as an inspiration, then I am honoured, but the main thing is to follow your own ambitions, work hard to achieve them and be yourself.”

At present, West Midlands Police is running its biggest recruitment drive in years. The force continues to re-instate its national campaign to attract hundreds of potentials to pursue a career in policing. To learn more, visit: https://jobs.west-midlands.police.uk/police-officer-recruitment/
