Police have released details of a man wanted for failing to appear at court after he was charged with causing damage to an ancient gravestone in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral.

Richard Barthorpe aged 26 from Sleaford Road, Hall Green, failed to turn up to a court hearing on 14 July after he was charged with damaging the headstone on 14 June.

The headstone, believed to be at least 150 years old, snapped off after repeatedly being run at and kicked.

The damage is estimated to cost £1,000 to repair.

Since his disappearance officers have been regularly checking addresses and local places where he is known to frequent, but still remains at large.

Sgt Jonathan Beach from Birmingham West and Central Police said: “said: “It is really important that anyone who sees this man or knows of his whereabouts calls me or one of my team on 101.

“We believe that he may still be in the Birmingham area and we are sure someone somewhere knows where he is.

“If people are reluctant to call the police then I would urge them to contact Crimestoppers. This is an independent charity and people can leave information anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.”
