The globally renowned artist Chila Kumari Burman gave a talk on female artistic empowerment in an event organised by Stellar International Art Foundation.

 

One of the few British Asian artists to exhibit worldwide, Chila’s talked her audience through the concepts of sexuality, feminism and gender featured in her artwork.

 

Discussing her Bindi Girl Series, her auto Portrait works and her film “Dada and the Punjabi Princess”, Chila gave her insight into the value of artistic practice as a force for social and cultural reflection.

 

The event was designed promote woman in art, as well as feminism and female empowerment.

 

Spanning over three decades, Liverpool-born Chila’s multi-media works draw upon fine and pop art imagery in intricate and multi-layered works which explore Asian femininity and her own personal family history.

 

Sexuality and its pleasures are a key force across her artwork and have contributed to debates about the body, ‘the female gaze’ and aestheticism.

 

Of the upcoming event, Chila, who is also a published author, said: “The value of artistic expression as a force for change cannot be underestimated. It has the power to challenge, to educate, and to prompt social reflection.”

 

“My driving motivation has always been to celebrate women and to empower younger generations and I am incredibly excited and honoured to be taking a leading role at this event”.

 

Chila’s work has been exhibited widely in the U.K., EU, North America and South Asia and has been acquired by leading public and private collections world-wide.

 

The Stellar Art Foundation event was held at a West London Mayfair private members club. It is part of Stellar Art’s aims to champion influential Indian and Western contemporary artists.

 

Founder of Stellar Art, Mrs Anita Choudhrie, said, “We are thrilled to bring the insightful and inspirational works of this most esteemed artist to life. Chila is a trailblazer and known globally and Stellar is honoured to host this event.
