Detectives investigating the attack, which happened on the night England played Italy in the World Cup, have released CCTV of three men who were captured on camera earlier, withdrawing money from a nearby cash point.
The 46-year-old had been drinking in the Westley Hotel on the evening of Saturday 14 June and was walking home along Westley Road in Acocks Green when he was approached by two men.
It is believed that the two men began arguing with the man and as they did so, a third man ran across the road and punched the victim with such force he fell to the ground unconscious.
All three men then walked off leaving him lying on the ground.
Detective Constable Katie Lees, from Birmingham’s Major Investigation Team, said: “This was a particularly nasty attack where the victim was just left lying in the road;. Not one of them checked the victim to make sure he was ok and simply walked away.
“As a result of the attack he was hospitalised for a fractured skill and jaw and still needs hospital treatment. He has been told that he has long term hearing damage as a result of the assault.
“I would appeal to anyone who knows who these men are to call me or one of the team on 101.
“Or if you recognise yourself in the footage then do the right thing and come forward so we can get your side of the story.”
Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101. Alternatively people can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers the independent charity on 0800 555 111.
