…Say posters that covered up billboard advertisements of bare-shouldered women
Billboard advertisements in Karachi, which feature bare-shouldered women, have been covered with black posters that read “Sell clothes, not your honour.”
However, those responsible for the posters, which were plastered over the fashion adverts in the middle of night, remain unknown.
Akhter Sheikh, the head of the Karachi Municipal Corporation’s advertising department told The Express Tribune, “These are not paid advertisements. People are putting up banners over the billboards late at night.”
“There is nothing we can do about it.”
The advertisements were put up to promote lawn collections by Pakistan’s fashion houses, which are often unveiled during the Spring.
The collections feature thin, filmy fabrics which are used to make 104F (40C) temperatures more comfortable.
Among the dozens of adverts that have been censored, a soap advert featuring Meera and a hoarding with Katrina Kaif on the cover have been targeted.
The Jamaat-e-Islami party, who organised the ‘anti-vulgarity’ day last month, have been accused of the campaign.
The conservative party sent a letter to prayer leaders criticising the use of women in “erotic” advertisements, but they deny being responsible for the cover-ups.
The covered-up advertisements have been taken down.
