Ladies of Mathura village bring life to the majestic creatures as they make jumpers to protect from the cold weather.
As weather conditions take a turn for the worse in Mathura, elephants of the Wildlife SOS Conservation and Care Centre find themselves in the warmth of hand knitted jumpers.
Ladies in a village near the sanctuary knitted some brightly coloured jumpers for the endangered species. Despite their thick skin, even elephants need warmth from the bitter cold.
The Wildlife SOS Conservation and Care Centre was created in 2010 and rehabilitates severely abused captive elephants. They currently house 20 elephants including 7 male and 13 female elephants.
Elephants were pictured modelling their new garments. The red leg wear and colourful jumpers cover the whole of the elephant’s body and brighten up the care centre.
Kartick Satyanarayan, founder of the centre stressed the importance of protecting these endangered species from the cold.
“It is important to keep our elephants protected from the bitter cold during this extreme winter, as they are weak and vulnerable having suffered so much abuse making them susceptible to ailments such as pneumonia,” she told the Times of India.
“The cold also aggravates their arthritis which is a common issue that our rescued elephants have to deal with.”
Kartick Satyanarayan is hoping to rescue another 50 elephants this year, so they may be in need of more knitters!
