Pakistan take drastic measures to stop polio.

Pakistan is keen to punish parents who fail to have their children vaccinated against Polio in a bid to stop the spread of the deadly disease.

The government plan to make immunisation compulsory by fining parents whose children have not received the medication and prosecuting religious groups who spread false information about injections.

Fines will amount to £700 and children could also be banned from school if they do not have an immunisation card.

Pakistan is one of three countries, which include Afghanistan and Nigeria; that have not eradicated the virus.

There were 198 cases of polio last year in the country’s tribal areas, where health care are limited and the large population of refugees make it difficult to spread the vaccine.

The move allegedly comes after the World Health organisation warned that Pakistan could be barred with travel sanctions if it could not get rid of the disease.

Two months ago, India became officially polio free.
