A university lecturer has been sentenced to six months in jail posting a Facebook status wishing for the death ofBangladesh’s Prime Minister.

Ruhul Khandaker was sentenced by theBangladesh’s high court in absentia, because he is studying inAustralia.

He posted the comments after the death of the country’s most famous filmmaker Tareq Masud, who died in a road accident last year.

The status said, “Tareq Masud died as a result of government giving licence to unqualified drivers. Many die, why does not Sheikh Hasina die?”

The status, which was posted fromAustralia, has since been deleted and Mr Khandakar was summoned to appear in court in August last year.

But after he repeatedly failed to attend, he was sentenced for contempt, deputy general Altaf Hossain told AFP.

The court also asked Mr Khandakar’s university employer to dismiss him from his job in accordance to the law.
