A match-making service has launched a new online game, which is inspired by a popular Indian app that mocks illegal dowry demands.
Shaadi.com’s ‘Angry Brides’ is based on the Indian app of the same name and can be downloaded as a free application on Facebook.
The application has already attracted 272,000 likes on the social networking website.
The game requires players to attack grooms who are greedy for a dowry with an array of crazy weapons, from stilettos to broomsticks.
The three groom – a doctor, a pilot and an engineer, avoid the attacks while demanding dowries that start at 1.5 million rupees (£19,000).
Every time a player successfully hits a groom, he or she earns points presented as cash, which is given to a virtual anti-dowry fund.
Paying or accepting a dowry has been illegal in India since 1961, however the this tradition of the bride’s parents giving gifts, money and other items to the groom’s parents still exists in some parts of the country.
Demands for dowries continue after the wedding ceremony and some brides are tortured or murdered if their families discontinue giving the groom’s family money and valuables.
In a statement, the dating website said, “Shaadi.com has always believed that marriage is an institution of love, where there is a place for togetherness, mutual understanding, family values and emotional support but not for dowry!”
