A toxic homemade Christmas liquor killed over 30 people and left dozens sick in the town of Toba Tek Singh, police have said.

45 people, belonging to Pakistan’s Christian minority, have been treated for poisoning after consuming the moonshine, as part of their Christmas celebrations.

Local police officer Atif Imran Qureshi adds: “Dozens of people were transported to hospitals in the eastern Punjab province after they consumed contaminated alcohol. A total of 19 people died, and 12 the day before.”

Senior police official Bilal Kamyana adds: “The maker and supplier of the toxic liquor is also included among the dead. The maker prepared liquor at home and sold it in polythene bags for 500 rupees (about £5) each.”

Alcohol is prohibited in Muslim-majority Pakistan, however non-Muslims can purchase it from licensed shops, with minorities requiring permits to buy it in restricted quantities.

Deaths from home brewed liquor occur often in Muslim-majority Pakistan, as poorer people opt for the more affordable alternative.

The deaths usually occur around religious festivals. Earlier last year, 40 people were said to have died after drinking toxic liquor days ahead of the festival of Holi.
