Lemonade VS 25
Adele won the highly sought after Album of the Year Award for her album 25. The British star refused the award, insisting it belonged to Beyoncé. “I can’t possibly accept this award,” she said during her acceptance speech. “The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-baring… we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light.”
Backstage she said: “I thought it was her year. What the f*** does she have to do to win Album of the Year?”
She was also photographed ‘pulling a Mean Girls’, by breaking her Grammy in half, presumably to give a piece to Beyoncé.
As well as Album of the Year, Adele also won 4 other awards that evening and gave a musical tribute to George Michael. She bravely stopped the tribute mid-way and asked to start again:
“I f***ed up, I can’t do it again like last year. … I can’t mess this up for him.”
Beyonce Slays (Again)
We’re pretty sure Beyoncé could sing the Yellow Pages and it would sound good. No one could’ve blamed her for sitting this year’s performance out, after recently announcing her pregnancy, but Bey did not disappoint. Her staging and costume all matched her majestic voice as she performed at the Awards. It was visually beautiful with holograms of 3 generations of her family; her mother, herself, and her daughter Blue Ivy, as well as an amazing sun goddess costume, complete with a golden crown, and the perfectly in sync backing dancers. She sang “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles” during her 10 minute performance, and proved once again, why she’s known as Queen B.
MetalliGaga Flop
MetalliGaga was the lovechild of Metallica and Lady Gaga, and it could have been so good. But it wasn’t. Unfortunately, the performance with riddled with technical glitches and problems.
James Hetfield suffered complete mic failure, and thus his line-trading duet with Lady Gaga was awkward and incomplete. The rest was a combination of mic stands being knocked over in frustration and an uncomfortable rush to get the performance over and done with. It finished with James disgustedly throwing his guitar offstage in defeat. Oh dear.
Twenty One Pilots Ditch Their Trousers
Twenty One Pilots won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their hit song “Stressed Out”, and went to collect their award with style and grace. Well, about as much grace possible when you’re in your boxers.
The duo had been planning this for a long time, according to vocalist-keyboardist Tyler Joseph “It was a few years ago, and it was before Josh and I were able to make money playing music,” He invited bandmate Josh Dun over for a Grammy viewing party. “As we were watching, we noticed that every single one of us was in our underwear,” Joseph said. “Josh turned to me and said, ‘You know, if we ever go to the Grammys – if we ever win a Grammy – we should receive it just like this.'”
Gnarly Davidson Makes An Appearance
Cee Lo Green drew quite a lot of attention at the awards when his “alter ego” Gnarly Davidson showed up dressed as what some viewers likened to a Ferrero Rocher. The singer was covered from head to toe in gold, skin included. That wasn’t his only eyebrow raising outfit of the night though, as he showed up to the Grammy pre-show in a black Darth-Vader-esque costume. Cee Lo also took to social media to correct those who tagged him in the photos, instead of “Gnarly Davidson”.
