Insect listens in

By Arifa Aali

When an Indian man arrived at the doctors complaining of a strange itch, he hadn’t the faintest clue that the doctor would discover a 3-inch cricket burrowed inside the dark canals of his ear.
It was a horrifying moment, when the doctor bravely retrieved his handy-pair of tiny tweezers from his Dr Toolbox and used them gently to separate the invader from his new home. Fluttering inside the man’s ear canal, the spiky-thorn-like legged creature was expertly detached from the current host and exposed into the darkened room, where it was placed against a table- to reveal just how big the creature was.
The procedure proved to be tricky one, and all praises go to the doctor for his best efforts in removing twitching creepy crawly, while remaining careful not to dislodge the insect- fearing that it could burrow further in. A video has been posted online to showcase the incredible procedure.
Experts say it is likely that the bug crawled into the man’s ear in search of a shelter during day light hours. It is implausible the event caused any serious, long-term impairment to the man, but it could have potentially damaged the inner ear- resulting in temporary balance and hearing issues.
Crickets are notorious for their invasive natures, appearing all over globe, and cricket infestation is typically associated with tropical climates, where the survival of these cold-blooded species is determined by a stabilised condition of warm weather. highlight-image13
