Cricket legend Wasim Akram backs Mohammad Ali for a comeback
Pakistan’s former bowler Wasim Akram has shown support for shamed Mohammad Amir, telling reporters that he deserved to be forgiven and allowed to make a comeback to cricket.
The quote comes after 19-year-old Amir was released from a British jail after finishing half of his six-month sentence for taking part in a fixing scam at the 2010 Lord’s Test against England.
“I think we should move on in Amir’s case, forgive him as he has served his punishment for the mistake he committed and allow the youngster another chance,” Wasim told AFP.
“As a cricket-loving nation we must forgive him (Amir). He has done his time and once he serves his ban he should be allowed back into international cricket as he is one of the most talented bowlers.”
Amir purposefully bowled no-balls, along with partner Mohammad Asif, while team captain Salman Butt agreed to the fixing with agent Mashar Majeed in exchange for money.
Since the three have been found guilty of manipulating the match, the International Cricket Council (ICC) have banned them for five years.
Since being released from prison, Ali has publicly apologised and accused Butt of tricking him into the scandal.
“Lots of people including Imran Khan praised his talent and he was the hottest property in international cricket until he committed that mistake,” said Wasim.
“If Pakistan is fine, the ICC is fine, then it doesn’t matter what others say. Amir should play once he serves his ban.”
The Pakistan Cricket Board said that they would talk to the ICC in hope of allowing Amir to start a rehabilitation process, before considering him for selection after his ban.
