Amitabh Bachchan has now set his sights on the West, as he is to star in a Hollywood movie alongside 90s heartthrob Leonardo Di Caprio.
The Bollywood legend is to appear in the film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel ‘The Great Gatesby’.
Amitabh will be playing Mayer Wolfsheim, a Jewish man who Fitzgerald describes as a gambler in his classic masterpiece.
On a grand budget of $125 million, the film has already begun shooting in Australia, with Romeo and Juliet mastermind Baz Lurman in the director’s seat.
The Great Gatesby is set in the 1920s America, the golden age of glamour and excess before the great depression hit the US.
The Australian director did not hold back in gushing about having Amitabh on board.
“Over the years, Amitabh’s films have made a tremendous impression on my life and work. His film Sholay was my introduction to Indian cinema,” Luhrmann told Indo-Asian News Service.
Mr Buchchan has also told reporters that he won’t be paid for his role, as he has waived his fee.
In his blog, the 68 year old wrote that he “refused any remuneration” because his one scene appearance was a “friendly gesture” to Luhrmann.
The veteran actor explained that the acclaimed director came his office during his visit toIndia.
He then showed Mr Buchchan some painting of a prominent painter that had fascinated him, before offering him the short role.
“It is a gesture,” the star told reporters.
A self-confessed Bollywood fan, Luhrmann has already dabbled in Bollywood culture by featuring the song “Chamma Chamma” in his early noughties hit, ‘Moulin Rouge’
