Bollywood are to bring back soft porn by releasing a movie about the actress who epitomised it in the 1980s and 90s.
‘The Dirty Picture’ is said to be about the life of Silk Smitha, a south Indian actress who became a household name with her semi-nude scenes and brazen on-screen personality.
Director Milan Luthria, whose film will be open in Indian cinemas on 2 December, told Reuters that he decided to make the film because although there were many like her, she broke the mould.
“There were a lot of women like her, this movie is not just about her. Like Nylon Nalini or Polyester Padmini. So we found a slice of life which was unique,” he explained.
“She chose to walk where nobody had walked before. She decided to make a career out of selling sex.”
The risqué actress will be played by Vidya Balan, who recently starred in Raj Kumar Gupta‘s No One Killed Jessica.
On the leading lady, Milan was full of compliments.
“She was my first choice. She is a quintessential, voluptuous Indian beauty — the kind of face and figure that is disappearing from Indian cinema.”
The film has been banned in Pakistan.
