A West Midlands high street has been named as the first in the UK to profit by a £1billion Government supported funding project.

Stirchley is among 14 UK shopping hubs singled out by the High Streets Task Force.

It will supposedly get up to £25m in preparation, expert help and access to research into entrepreneurs.

The scheme was declared by the Government because of suggestions of a specialist board on the high street led by Sir John Timpson.

It will be trailed  first in 20 town/city centers before being turned out in 101 regions across the nation.

Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry said the new funding would give “communities the money and support they need to unleash the potential of their towns.”

He added: “Every place has its own unique strengths and challenges but all our town centres and high streets have one thing in common – they are the lifeblood of communities.”

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick stated: “The Task Force will provide the tools they need to get the best advice possible and a dashboard of key local data.”

Ministers will additionally launch a conference on whether to build a digital register of commercial properties, which may make it easier to put empty commercial shops to use once again.

The primary 14 towns to participate in the new scheme and be issued Government funding will be:

Swinton Town centre – Salford

Thornton Heath – Croydon

Cheadle – Staffordshire Moorlands

Aldershot Town Centre – Rushmoor

Stirchley – Birmingham

Accrington Town Centre – Hyndburn

Kendal – South Lakeland

Friargate – Preston

Coventry City Centre – Coventry

Hartlepool Town Centre – Hartlepool

Ellesmere Port Town Centre – Cheshire West and Chester

West Bromwich Town Centre – Sandwell

Huyton Town Centre – Knowsley

Withington District Centre – Manchester
