Former Lord Mayor of Birmingham Chaudhry Rashid has been remembered fondly following his passing. Throughout his diverse career, Mr. Rashid represented Small Heath and Nechells wards and served as a magistrate. He was deeply involved in numerous boards, including the Birmingham Family Housing Association and St. Peters (Saltley) Housing Association, and also held governor positions at Mathew Boulton College and Regents Park Primary School.

Mr. Rashid, a father of seven and devoted husband to his wife Shafait Begum, left a significant mark on his community. His tenure as Lord Mayor of Birmingham, starting in May 2008, showcased his commitment to serving the city and its residents. Throughout his life, he embodied the values of public service and community engagement.

In addition to his civic duties, Mr. Rashid contributed actively to educational institutions, serving as a governor at both Mathew Boulton College and Regents Park Primary School. His involvement in these roles reflects his dedication to nurturing the next generation and ensuring access to quality education for all.

Councillor Majid Mahmood said he was saddened by the news of his colleague who ‘set the bar high’ for others. He added: “I was honoured to have the privilege of serving on the Birmingham City Council alongside Ch Rashid who provided wise counsel from the first day that I was elected in 2011.

“A very determined, well educated individual who went out of his way to help and guide us. He set a high bar for the rest of us in his community work, and council duties. A huge loss for the city.”

The passing of Mr. Rashid leaves a void in the Birmingham community, but his legacy of service and leadership will endure. Tributes pour in for a man who dedicated his life to making Birmingham a better place for all its residents.

Mahmood Hussain posted on Facebook: “I’m saddened that former Lord Mayor of Birmingham Haji Chaudhry Abdul Rashid has left this temporary world. He served his community as a local councillor tirelessly for decades.

“I had the privilege of serving with him on the Council and he would always work tirelessly for his residents. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Mr Rashid’s family are sitting at Golden Hillock Road Masjid for the next few days for family and friends to visit to offer condolences.
