Over 900 people have been hurt and at least 233 people have died as a result of a terrible train collision in the Indian state of Odisha.

The incident happened on Friday 2nd June when the Howrah Superfast Express, which was travelling on a different track, struck the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express after it had derailed.

The incident left passengers laying by the tracks and severely damaged train compartments. Rescue operations are in progress, with a focus on freeing trapped passengers and giving injured people medical care.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, expressed his sadness at the occurrence and sent his condolences to the impacted families. Amit Shah, the home minister, too expressed his profound sorrow over the tragedy. Local law enforcement and rescue crews have arrived on the scene, with the injured and survivors transported to hospitals in ambulances and buses. An emergency medical response has been sent by medical personnel.

As rescue efforts go on, it is still unclear how many people have died or been injured. Amitabh Sharma, executive director of Indian Railways, stated that in addition to the two passenger trains, a stalled freight train was also involved in the collision. There are tales of passengers still being trapped under the debris, raising fears that the death toll may rise much higher.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of occurrences involving rail accidents every year in India. In recent years, there have been fewer of these accidents as a result of the government’s major financial investments and technological advancements to improve railway safety.

Odisha’s position is very dire, and the rescue efforts are anticipated to last all night and maybe into the following day. The National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Air Force are only two of the organisations that the government has summoned to help with the rescue efforts.

In order to stay informed about the situation and make sure all required steps are done, Prime Minister Modi has spoken to the minister of railroads.

The goal of the ongoing rescue operations is still to save lives and treat the injured. To ensure that the crisis is handled promptly and effectively, the authorities are coordinating their efforts.
