Calm Drinks has added two new products to its range, releasing canned cold brew americano and an oat milk latte version, both infused with CBD under its Calm Coffee brand.
Taking note of changing trends with the food and beverage sector, both drinks are vegan friendly and use natural ingredients and flavourings. The Americano version is flavoured with natural chocolate and vanilla flavourings and infused with 10mg of CBD. The Latte version uses oat milk to ensure its dairy free and vegan status. Oat milk has seen a huge increase in popularity in the UK, with a 70% increase in sales in 2018 and non-dairy alternatives now accounting for over 25% of sales.
Although the cold brew sector is a busy and growing space, with products from high street favourites such as Starbucks, Caffe Nero and Costa dominating shelf space, none of the mainstream players have as yet embraced cannabidiol extracts.
As CBD is classed as a food supplement, no medical claims are allowed to be made by the seller of manufacturer of foods or drinks that contain it. However users of it have described how it eases pain, and reduces anxiety, which is why it pairs so well with a daily drink of coffee.
The World Health Organisation has studied the effects of cannabidiol and has concluded that they are safe and well tolerated in humans and that there is no risk of physical dependence on them. They concluded that “To date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD,” and also determined that CBD has “been demonstrated as an effective treatment for epilepsy” in adults, children, and even animals, and that there’s “preliminary evidence” that CBD could be useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, psychosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other serious conditions.
Calm Drinks also retail hot chocolate and CBD Coffee in both ground and whole bean format for those who prefer a hot drink.
