The 52-year-old Irish singer appeared on the Good Morning Britain show to discuss her conversion to Islam. Sinead changed her religious in late 2018. She began wearing a hijab and following religious teachings in the Quran.
Sinead claims that she knew that Islam was the religion for her as soon as she read the second chapter of the faith’s central text. She said: “I was like, oh my god I’ve been a Muslim my whole life and didn’t even know it.”
However, Sinead had not admitted to ever feeling this way before her conversion. She was raised a Catholic but had contested against the Pope many times on stage; despite the fact she said she was obsessed with the religion.
Speaking out about the reaction from other Muslims to her change of faith, she said the feedback has mostly been positive. She states that followers of the religion are very “tender” and “loving”, despite how they are portrayed in the mainstream media. She now feels part of a close brother and sisterhood of people. Commenting on how her children perceived her, Sinead stated: “My kids are very proud of me.”
However, others have not been so welcoming in regards to her conversion. However, Sinead said that as a controversial figure, she is “used to putting up with abuse.” She also commented that people’s disapproval makes her hold her head up higher and be “proud” of her faith.
Sinead admitted that she had faced prejudice from other women primarily as a result of her new religion. She has been accused of ‘conforming’ to modest beauty standards set out by Islam by wearing a headscarf. She defended herself by comparing hair to a hijab and claimed that her tweet about not wanting to socialise with white people being untrue.
