The project, ‘From needs assessment to action: embedding sex worker equity in Birmingham’, won the Public and Population Health category at the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards 2026.

Members of the Inclusion Health team from Birmingham City Council’s Public Health Division, who delivered the project, collected their award at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 10th June.

The programme saw the team deliver evidence-based system change to address sex workers’ health inequalities, utilising data from the 2024 Sex Worker Analysis of Health Needs (SWAN) to reshape commissioning, improve multi-agency collaboration, improve access to services, strengthen data and reduce stigma.

The SWAN research identified a number of areas requiring action, including:

High levels of unmet sexual, physical and mental health needs

A multi-directional relationship between trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance misuse

A history of stigma and discrimination within healthcare, leading to distrust and avoidance

Practical barriers related to service accessibility, safety and inflexible delivery models

Supported by the city’s participation in the national Connecting Health Communities (CHC) programme, the team led a collaboration with sex workers, statutory and community based services, working together as Birmingham’s Sex Worker Health Partnership to design tangible service improvements, which it continues to deliver today.

Award judges praised the ‘groundbreaking’ programme for being ‘courageous, compelling and genuinely innovative’, commenting that they were ‘hugely impressed by its compassion, ambition and originality’ and noting that the initiative was ‘transforming lives and reshaping perception’.

Councillor Nosheen Khalid, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Birmingham City Council, said: “As part of Birmingham’s wider commitment to inclusion health and a population health approach, the council recognises sex workers as a frequently overlooked group experiencing some of the poorest health outcomes and inequalities in the city, so I am delighted that the positive action being taken to address this has been recognised on a national level with this award.

“My congratulations to the Inclusion Health team for their hard work in turning research into action that is already making a significant positive impact, and also for their ongoing commitment and perseverance to ensuring that the city’s most marginalised populations are able to access the services and support that best meets their needs.”

Sally Burns, Director of Public Health at Birmingham City Council, said: “Winning this award is fantastic news for the team and for the city as a whole, as it demonstrates the importance of compassion and co-production in addressing the needs and breaking the cycle of disadvantage and stigma affecting the most marginalised communities.

“We know from the research that informed this innovative piece of work that doing nothing is simply not an option because of the devastating and costly consequences this can have for individuals’ lives and wider society as a whole, so I’m pleased that we are taking action to ensure better health outcomes.”

With two months to go until the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships , local athletics hero Matthew Hudson-Smith was surprised by naming the North Stand’s extension for the Championships

The temporary extension of the Alexander Stadium’s North stand will be called the Matthew Hudson-Smith Stand with the title in place until the end of the Championships.

The European record-holder and second-most decorated male European athlete in history, Matthew Hudson-Smith is a part of a long legacy of athletics excellence from the West Midlands region. Having trained with Birchfield Harriers and proudly from Wolverhampton, the sprinter has previously stated his wish for the back straight of his home stadium to carry his name.

Matthew Hudson-Smith visited Alexander Stadium to talk about the road to the European Athletics Championships and while there, was surprised by the stand name unveiling in a special moment attended by his family, his first coach Sharon Morris, alongside former sprinter and Team GB 4x400m Team Coach, Martyn Rooney with representatives of Birmingham 2026, Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Combined Authority also in attendance.

Team GB & NI athlete, Matthew Hudson-Smith, is no stranger to honours, with two Olympic medals (silver in 400m at Paris and 4x400m relay bronze), four European titles, and a World Championships silver medal. He is also the fifth-fastest person in the 400 m event in history.

Thousands of local children will be attending the event this August, the first time the European Athletics Championships has been staged in the UK, and organisers are keen to inspire the next generation of athletes.

Fans from across the West Midlands and beyond will have a chance to see Matthew’s world-class talent up close this summer and can sit together in the Matthew Hudson-Smith Stand to give him a hero’s roar as he races by in the 400m events.

The European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026 will see over 1,600 athletes from 48 nations compete for glory. With 44 gold medals to be won across the seven evening sessions, fans will see history being made under the floodlights. Many of Europe’s biggest names are expected to target their 2026 summer ambitions at Birmingham – making this a superb chance for fans to witness world-class performances on home soil.

Matthew Hudson-Smith, said: “It caught me off-guard walking in to see the stand is going to be named after me, and it was a special moment to share it with my family

“It’s just an indication of all the hard work I’ve put in and to get a stand named after me is the icing on the cake of a great career and now I want to add more to it at Europeans.

“Birmingham for me is home. I miss the people, I miss the food, I miss the environment. I always try and represent home to the best of my ability. It just means the world to me to come back here, run and show my talents to kids from the area to show them that they can do it.”

Cherry Alexander, Championship Director for Birmingham 2026, said: “Matthew is a true homegrown star, and we were delighted to welcome him home by unveiling the Matthew Hudson-Smith Stand for Birmingham 2026 with his family and peers in attendance.
“Matthew’s international achievements are inspiring a future generation to dig deep, and this stand is a celebration of that. We hope to fill the stand with young local fans, and maybe even the next Matthew-Hudson Smith will be in the crowd watching him compete in front of a home crowd this August.”

Chris Jordan, Director of Neighbourhoods, Culture, Leisure & Sport at Birmingham City Council who took part in the reveal, said: “It’s fantastic to join partners in celebrating local boy Matthew Hudson-Smith and his success on the international stage, and how that journey has been shaped by his beginnings at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

“As we look ahead to the European Athletics Championships this August, I wish him and all of Team GB & NI the very best of luck. Birmingham is buzzing for the championships, and we can’t wait to welcome athletes, fans and visitors from across the UK, Europe and around the world to experience our warm Brummie welcome first hand.”

Ed Cox, chief executive at West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), said: “Matthew is a real inspiration to every young person in this region. He has become a top-class athlete thanks to way his natural talent was recognised and nurtured by his local athletics club.

“The Mayor has made improving the prospects and wellbeing of young people a top priority and our job at the WMCA is to make sure they can access the same support, pathways and opportunities Matthew had.

“We hope having his name on the stand at the Alexander Stadium will inspire him to achieve even more success when he competes here later this year and show those sitting in the seats, they can also reach their full potential through a combination of skill, hard work and our support.”

The new political administration of Birmingham City Council has been agreed following the completion of the council’s AGM.

This evening (Friday 5 June) a meeting of the full council voted on the proposal for the new leader of the council.

Cllr Roger Harmer (Lib Dem) was voted in as leader, with Cllr Julien Pritchard (Green) named as deputy leader.

The new administration is a partnership including Green, Liberal Democrat parties and the Better Birmingham and Birmingham Independent Groups.

Cllr Roger Harmer said: “The challenges our city faces demand both new policies that put our residents first and a commitment to ensure they are actually delivered. Our city requires leadership that is steady, pragmatic, and unwavering in its focus on the issues that matter most to residents. In recent years Birmingham has faced uncertainty, and real damage to its reputation. Now, more than ever, we require a council that unites behind common goals and delivers real change.

“Let us be clear about our priorities. First and foremost, we must get the basics right. Our streets should be free from litter and fly tipping. The bin strike has gone unresolved for far too long, impacting the daily lives of thousands. Tackling this head-on is not optional; it is essential.

“This coalition shows what can be achieved when we put our city above narrow party politics. The Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, and the Independent Councillors have come together, united by a vision of progress grounded in action.”

Cllr Julien Pritchard said: “Green Party Councillors are proud to step up to serve our fantastic city and start working to give hope back to Birmingham. We look forward to working towards a greener, safer and fairer city, one that works for everyone, and where no one resident or community is left behind.”

“Greens believe in doing politics differently and our commitment to this forms the basis of our collaborative administration. We look forward to working with our partners to address residents’ priorities and towards a more hopeful, inclusive and equal city.”

At the meeting the new Leader set out his cabinet members and portfolios, which are:

Leader: Roger Harmer (Lib Dem)

Deputy Leader Economy and Sustainability: Julien Pritchard (Green), Deputy (Economy and Sustainability) James Hinton (LD)

Finance: Chris Garghan (Green), Deputy Shaukat Khan (LD)

City Operations and Digital (formerly Environment): Harris Khaliq (Better Birmingham), Deputy Joe Peacock (Green)

Transport: Rob Grant (Green), Deputy Izzy Knowles (LD)

Housing and Homelessness: Baber Baz (LD), Deputy Atikur Rahman (Green)

Children, Young People, and Families: Kamel Hawwash (Green), Deputy Mumtaz Hussain (LD)

Health and Social Care: Nosheen Khalid (BB), Hamzah Sheikh (Green)

Culture and Heritage: Deborah Harries (LD), Deputy Raheem Humphreys (Green)

Equalities Communities & Social Justice: Jane Baston (Green), Deputy Jamil Khan (BB)

For the short period the council has been without a political administration, services have continued to be delivered and now the new political leadership will focus on stability and delivery of key services, working alongside senior officers.

Birmingham City Council is marking Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) History Month this June by highlighting new work to better support communities across the city.

The new work includes the introduction of a dedicated team to provide support, strengthened partnerships throughout the city and the reopening of the designated transit site on Proctor Street.

The council’s Gypsy and Traveller service is now led by a dedicated team focused on improving engagement, building trust and ensuring GRT communities can access the support they need.

Alongside this, the council has been working with a range of partners, including West Midlands Police, education services, housing providers and charities to improve outcomes for GRT communities.

These partnerships are helping to connect families with key services such as healthcare, education and safeguarding, whilst also supporting earlier intervention and more joined-up working.

As part of this wider programme of work, Birmingham City Council has also reopened its official Gypsy and Traveller transit site on Proctor Street, providing a safe and managed space for those travelling through the city. The site forms an important part of the council’s approach to supporting GRT communities while reducing the impact of unauthorised encampments.

Through this work, the council is reaffirming its commitment to inclusion to ensure GRT communities are recognised, respected, and supported as part of the city’s diverse population.

Paul Langford, Executive Director of City Housing at Birmingham City Council, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to create real change. We’re working closely with communities and partners to better understand needs, challenge misconceptions and build a service we can be proud of.

“Building trust is key. We’re starting to see positive changes, with partners working more closely together and residents feeling more confident in sharing their experiences with us.”

“Providing suitable, well-managed sites is a vital step in supporting communities and creating better outcomes for everyone.”

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month is a national initiative that celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of GRT communities, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face.

The council urges anyone who requires support, contact the dedicated team on GRT-team@birmingham.gov.uk or visit the dedicated webpage here.

The United Kingdom is confronting a mixture of economic pressures and political challenges as policymakers seek to maintain stability amid a changing international environment. Developments across Europe, global markets, and domestic politics are influencing government priorities in early June 2026.

Economic conditions remain a central concern. Financial markets are responding to global uncertainties, including energy price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. Investors are closely watching inflation trends, labor market performance, and broader European economic developments.

The UK government continues to focus on growth, productivity, and public services. Policymakers face the challenge of supporting economic expansion while managing fiscal pressures. Business groups have called for measures that encourage investment and innovation, particularly in technology, green energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Meanwhile, public debate remains active on issues such as immigration, healthcare, and the cost of living. Political parties are positioning themselves around these themes as they seek to respond to voter concerns. Analysts suggest that economic performance is likely to remain a major factor influencing public opinion throughout the year.

The UK’s international role also continues to evolve. Cooperation with European partners, trade relationships beyond Europe, and participation in global security discussions remain important aspects of foreign policy. Regional developments, including conflicts and economic disruptions abroad, have direct implications for British policymakers.

Experts note that the UK retains significant strengths, including a large services sector, world-class universities, and a leading financial center. However, maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain global economy will require continued investment and policy adaptation.

As 2026 progresses, the country’s leadership will face difficult decisions on economic management and public spending. The coming months are expected to provide a clearer indication of whether current policies can deliver sustained growth while addressing the concerns of households and businesses across the United Kingdom.

Relations between India and Pakistan continue to attract international attention as analysts assess the state of one of South Asia’s most important and complex bilateral relationships. Recent commentary suggests that while tensions persist, both countries have generally avoided major escalation in recent months.

Political and security issues remain at the center of the relationship. Historical disputes, cross-border concerns, and differing strategic priorities continue to shape diplomatic interactions. At the same time, regional and global developments have influenced how both nations position themselves internationally.

Some analysts argue that Pakistan has recently benefited from renewed diplomatic engagement with several international partners, while India has focused on strengthening its economic and geopolitical influence through broader regional initiatives. These developments have contributed to changing perceptions of the strategic balance in South Asia.

Economic factors also play a role in regional stability. Both countries face distinct domestic priorities, including growth, employment, and investment. Although trade between India and Pakistan remains limited compared with its potential, economists frequently note that greater economic engagement could provide mutual benefits if political conditions allow.

Security experts continue to monitor the possibility of future tensions. However, several assessments suggest that both governments understand the risks associated with escalation and have shown interest in managing crises through diplomatic and institutional channels.

International observers believe that broader regional stability will depend partly on the ability of India and Pakistan to maintain communication during periods of disagreement. Confidence-building measures and diplomatic engagement are often cited as important tools for reducing risks.

Although significant differences remain unresolved, recent developments indicate a period of cautious management rather than direct confrontation. Whether this trend continues will depend on domestic politics, regional events, and the willingness of both sides to pursue dialogue when opportunities arise.

Relations between India and Bangladesh remain an important focus of regional diplomacy as both countries work to manage differences while preserving longstanding economic and strategic ties. Recent discussions and diplomatic engagements suggest that both sides recognize the importance of maintaining constructive cooperation despite ongoing challenges.

Officials from the two countries are preparing for high-level border and security discussions, reflecting efforts to strengthen communication on issues ranging from trade to border management. These talks come at a time when regional dynamics and domestic political developments have introduced new complexities into the bilateral relationship.

Economic cooperation remains a major pillar of the relationship. India and Bangladesh share extensive trade links, transportation networks, and development projects. However, analysts point to concerns involving border management, water-sharing arrangements, and public perceptions that occasionally create friction between the neighbors.

Tourism and people-to-people exchanges have also experienced changes in recent years. Industry data indicate that travel patterns between the two countries have been affected by diplomatic tensions and shifting economic conditions, prompting calls for renewed efforts to strengthen connectivity and cultural engagement.

Observers note that Bangladesh’s evolving domestic political landscape has influenced regional relationships. As political parties and institutions adapt to changing circumstances, foreign policy decisions are receiving increased attention both at home and abroad. India, meanwhile, continues to emphasize regional stability and economic integration as key objectives.

Experts argue that continued dialogue will be essential for preventing misunderstandings and building confidence. Cooperation on trade, infrastructure, energy, and border security offers opportunities for both countries to strengthen mutual interests.

While challenges remain, policymakers on both sides appear committed to maintaining engagement. The coming months may prove significant in determining whether recent diplomatic initiatives can help reduce tensions and create a more stable framework for bilateral cooperation in South Asia.

Pakistan’s government is entering a critical period as it prepares to unveil its federal budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year. Economic policymakers face the difficult task of balancing growth ambitions with commitments made under an ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) support program.

Officials have held consultations with coalition partners and business groups ahead of the budget presentation. Discussions have focused on taxation, spending priorities, and measures aimed at improving export competitiveness. Business organizations have urged the government to reduce certain taxes and provide incentives that could help expand exports and stimulate investment.

The IMF has emphasized fiscal discipline and tax reform as part of Pakistan’s broader economic stabilization efforts. According to recent discussions, authorities are working toward maintaining budget targets while broadening the tax base and improving revenue collection.

Economic observers note that Pakistan has made progress in stabilizing key indicators compared with previous years, but significant challenges remain. Public debt, development spending constraints, and external vulnerabilities continue to shape policy choices. Several reports suggest that IMF-linked conditions are limiting the government’s room for extensive tax relief or large spending increases.

At the same time, policymakers hope that improved fiscal management will strengthen investor confidence and support long-term economic growth. Export expansion remains a major priority, with business leaders advocating measures that would enhance competitiveness in international markets.

Political leaders recognize that economic issues remain a top concern for citizens. Inflation, employment opportunities, and living costs continue to influence public sentiment. The upcoming budget will therefore be closely scrutinized by both domestic stakeholders and international financial institutions.

As Pakistan moves toward the next fiscal year, the government’s ability to balance reform commitments with economic growth objectives will likely determine the success of its broader recovery strategy. The budget announcement is expected to provide a clearer picture of how authorities intend to navigate these competing priorities.

India entered June 2026 with renewed confidence in its economic outlook as government officials highlighted strong growth figures and resilient domestic demand. Recent economic assessments indicate that India remains among the fastest-growing major economies, supported by infrastructure investment, manufacturing expansion, and steady consumer spending.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the country’s economic achievements, pointing to growth above 7% in the previous fiscal year. Analysts note that a combination of tax reforms, digitalization initiatives, and public infrastructure projects has helped sustain growth despite a challenging global environment.

However, risks remain. Rising oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have increased concerns about inflation and import costs. Financial markets have shown caution, with investors closely monitoring energy prices and global trade developments.

The government is also focusing on employment generation and manufacturing competitiveness. Industry leaders argue that expanding domestic production and attracting foreign investment will be essential to maintaining growth momentum. The country’s technology sector continues to attract international attention, while new investments in renewable energy and logistics are expected to create additional opportunities.

Political developments are also drawing attention. Opposition parties within the INDIA alliance recently met to discuss strategy and coordination ahead of future electoral contests. While political competition remains intense, economic performance is likely to remain a central issue in public debate.

Experts believe India’s ability to balance growth with inflation control will be a key test in the coming months. Strong domestic demand provides a solid foundation, but global economic uncertainty and energy market volatility could influence policy decisions.

As policymakers prepare for the next phase of economic planning, India’s challenge will be to sustain high growth while ensuring that the benefits of development reach a broader section of society. For now, the country appears determined to maintain its position as one of the world’s most dynamic major economies.
