The vehicle, striking in Warburtons orange livery and proudly stating ‘Our electric trucks are the best thing since sliced bread’, joins the company’s secondary bread fleet operating out of its Enfield bakery.  The D Z.E., which can cover up to 150km on a single charge, can carry around six tonnes of bread and bakery products to multiple locations across London.

Fully electric, the D Z.E. is eligible to operate in the capital’s Ultra Low Emission Zone and Congestion Charge Zone without incurring charges, while its zero tailpipe emissions in use and low traffic noise make it ideal for Warburtons urban deliveries.

Steven Gray, Warburtons National Transport Manager, says: “As our first 16 tonne electric truck goes on the road, we mark another important milestone in our sustainable fleet management.  By using the Renault Trucks D Z.E. we offer our customers the same quality of service but with zero tailpipe emissions and quieter operation in urban environments.”

Warburtons first D Z.E. is a 4×2 rigid featuring box body with rear side door and tail lift by PPS Commercials. Powered by 200kWh, 600 V lithium-ion batteries, the Alternating Current synchronous motor with permanent-magnet technology delivers maximum power of 185 kW, continuous power of 130 kW and maximum torque of 425 Nm. The Z.E. reduction gearbox offers two forward speeds and one reverse.

The D Z.E., which will recharge at Warburtons Enfield site, is equipped with a 22kW on board AC charger and is compatible with DC fast charging up to 150kW.

The vehicle comes with Renault Trucks Battery Performance Promise which guarantees that the battery will operate for up to 10 years or deliver 250 MW of energy over the vehicle’s life. Renault Trucks engineers have taken Warburtons operational data for a number of Enfield-based routes and mapped this against a real world, real time traffic database derived from over 1 million miles of vehicle telematics data. Their calculation of the total energy consumption of the vehicle means it will operate for a ten year period without using more than 250 MW of energy, and this is the contract duration for the first Warburtons D ZE vehicle.

Supplied by Renault Trucks dealer, JDS Trucks & Vans, aftersales support for the D Z.E., which is Renault Trucks’ first production electric truck to go on the road in the UK, will be provided by local dealer Norfolk Truck & Van Enfield throughout the ten-year contract.

The decision was made in light of the recent Supreme Court judgment stating that Uber drivers, represented by law firm Leigh Day, are entitled to receive the national minimum wage and holiday pay.

Addison Lee’s appeal to the Court of Appeal had been put on hold in anticipation of the Supreme Court judgment.

Already, an Employment Tribunal in 2017 had found that a group of Addison Lee drivers were workers. This was upheld by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2018.

Leigh Day, which represents more than 100 Addison Lee drivers, believes thousands of drivers could be entitled to an average of £10,000 in compensation.

The private hire company, which provides services for well-known clients such as ITV, Sky and the BBC, will only be legally required to compensate those who have brought a claim.

Addison Lee Driver David Bollard, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, said:

“It’s not just the financial side, it’s also the recognition that the way they treat their workers isn’t right.

“I worked for Addison Lee for more than four years and over that time the treatment of drivers seemed to get worse.

“There’s a revolving door of drivers which means they don’t really care about you as individuals because you’re easily replaced.”

Liana Wood, a solicitor in the employment team at Leigh Day, said:

“This is a huge decision in favour of Addison Lee drivers and yet another blow to big firms operating in the gig economy.

“Leigh Day has been fighting for workers’ rights on behalf of our clients for several years, so I’m delighted that the end is now finally in sight for these hard-working drivers who deserve to be treated fairly.

“This decision follows hot on the heels of the landmark Uber judgment in the Supreme Court. At Leigh Day we hope that other companies with similar business models to Uber and Addison Lee recognise that they cannot continue to deny people basic rights such as holiday pay and the national minimum wage.”

Leigh Day also represents clients from delivery company Stuart in a similar workers’ rights claim.

In May 2018, a Stuart courier succeeded in a claim that he was a worker in the Employment Tribunal, with this decision upheld by the Employment Appeal Tribunal in December 2019.

A hearing date in the Court of Appeal has been fixed for October 2021 after a further appeal by Stuart. As well as individual claimants, Leigh Day is also acting for some GMB members who drive for Addison Lee.

Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser, said: 

“Addison Lee had ample opportunity to do the right thing by drivers and sit down and talk with GMB about ensuring their workers were treated within the law. They chose instead to pay lawyers to try and argue the impossible.

“This judgment is not based just on law but good common sense and sends a further message to those who would continue to exploit workers through a bogus self-employment model.

“GMB will assist our members in exposing the reality of the working relationship.

“We urge Addison Lee to accept the various rulings of the court and sit down with GMB to discuss how improved conditions for drivers makes for a better workplace for all.”

The large mural, which measures over 10 metres wide and 3 metres tall, has been produced by local student Coree Bridgen. The artwork celebrates Wolverhampton’s landmarks and history, including references to Molineux, Prince Albert’s Statue, a giant wolf, The Black Country Flag and Banks’s Park Brewery – where Coree’s grandad worked for over 30 years. 

Coree’s design was chosen as the winner of a competition arranged by staff at the station. The initiative invited those with an artist flare to come up with designs to brighten up the waiting area during the ongoing station redevelopment works. 

Coree, said: “I am thankful for the opportunity of painting the mural. The staff at the station were very welcoming and I enjoyed our conversations. I would like to say thank you to Andy for being a big help and my fantastic art teachers at St Matthias School. Without them, none of this would have happened. I hope this piece will allow me to have future opportunities with other businesses.” 

In autumn 2018, hoarding was put up along the main wall of the waiting room. Staff at the station saw this as an opportunity to get the local community involved and bring a flavour of the city onto the railway. 

Wolverhampton station manager Mel Bryett, said: “Coree’s design is fantastic, and reflects perfectly what my team had in mind for the hoarding – something that links to local landmarks and symbols. The city is undergoing a lot of change at the moment – particularly around the station – but we still wanted the lounge to be inviting for passengers during these works. 

“We have had some great feedback from passengers while Coree has been hard at work, and would encourage anyone passing through the station to come and have a look at what has been achieved – as it is truly magnificent!” 

The impressive mural can be found inside the waiting room on platform one, by the main information desk, and will be on display until the autumn. 

£150m is currently being spent on a new transport hub at the station, to connect Wolverhampton’s rail services to local buses and trams. The first phase of work is due to be completed this autumn – with the project due to be fully completed next year (2020).

The pound has not achieved this level since May 2017, where it closed the previous highest value of €1.153. The currency has also risen more than a penny against the US dollar to climb above $1.32, its highest value since October 2018. Theresa May earlier disclosed to the MPs that if her Brexit deal is dismissed one month from now, then they would be offered two separate votes by 13 March on whether the UK leaves with no deal or postpone Brexit beyond the present 29 March due date. 

Sterling slipped back slightly after the PM told the Commons that a growth would not make getting concessions from the EU any less demanding.The pound has turned into a Brexit pointer for financial markets, with its regard going up, the more investors see the odds of a delicate Brexit or the UK’s take off from the alliance being possibly stopped. It has also been reported that three senior ministers will leave, if the PM does not ensure that Brexit can be postponed, if her deal is dismissed again by the MPs. 

Labour also toughened its position on the possibility of a cliff edge exit, saying its second-choice arrangement would urge a “Credible Leave Option and Remain.” However, it would not contain the choice of a no-deal departure. Sterling’s rise hurt qualities on the FTSE 100 record, struggling to win the main part of their incomes in foreign currency, particularly in dollars. This is because the value of those sales is decreased when they are booked in the UK. 

Tauseef Asif 

30-year-old Canadian Gerald Cotten was in Jaipur, India with his wife, Jennifer Robertson, when he suddenly died due to complications with Crohn’s disease. 

The company’s social media page stated that Cotten was a “visionary leader” who was in India for the “opening of an orphanage.” The couple lived in the region of Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Cotten ran his company from his laptop.  

Cotten was known for being conscious about taking security measures; the laptop, email address and messaging system he used to run his business were encrypted and he took sole responsibility for the handling of funds and coins. Cotten viewed Bitcoin as technology to change the world using the virtual currency free from governments and banking systems. 

Launched in December 2013, Quadriga allowed users to deposit cryptocurrency through its online trading platform. It would store the digital coins on blockchain ledgers that are only accessible by an immutable alphanumeric code. The company had become Canada’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has 363,000 registered users. However, court filings have found that 92,000 of these have account balances that owe them money. It was also recently revealed the company transferred Bitcoins valued at almost half-a-million dollars into cold storage in early February 2018. Using this offline safeguard against hacking and theft meant these funds could not be accessed except by Cotton.  

Quadriga’s had been facing liquidity problems months before this problem. In January 2018, the Canadian bank CIBC froze five accounts containing an estimated C$26m linked to Quadriga’s payment processor in a dispute over the real owners of the funds. This dispute ended in court and this money was inaccessible. Quadriga also claims to have millions in bank drafts that it has been unable to deposit into accounts, as banks have been unwilling to accept them. A “severe liquidity crunch” was created due to these issues and left users unable to access their funds. Robertson has reported that she cannot find her late husband’s passwords or business records for the company and experts brought in to try to hack into Cotten’s other computers and mobile achieved only “limited success.” The firm also cannot pay the C$70 million in cash clients are owed. All trading on the platform is suspended for now. 

The Canadian Press reported that the company was granted temporary bankruptcy protection by Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Michael Wood, to stop any lawsuits from proceeding against the company for 30 days. Meanwhile, some Quadriga clients who claim they’re owed large sums of money are undertaking their own legal pathways, including software engineer Xitong Zou of Orillia, Ontario. Zou claims to be owed about C$560,000, being “one of the largest individual affected users” – in accordance to the affidavit filed in court on 5th February.  

There has also been speculation over Cotten’s will, which was filed only 12 days before his death and left substantial assets to his wife, including many international properties, an aeroplane and a yacht. There has been online speculation surrounding Quadriga’s story, with many who doubt only Cotten had access to funds. Industry experts have analysed the transaction history and have raised the possibility that the cold storage reserves may not even exist. Others have been speculating if Cotten faked his death as part of an “exit scam” and Robertson has reported she has received death threats and online since Quadriga’s public announcement. 

One thing is for certain: there are mysteries surrounding the Quadriga case that may never be resolved, and funds that clients may have lost forever.

British Airways has today announced that it will fly from Heathrow to Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan, from June 2, 2019. Tickets are on sale from today. 

The route will launch as a three-per-week service, operated on a three-class Boeing 787 Dreamliner – British Airways’ newest long-haul fleet that is 20 per cent more fuel efficient than other aircraft and features larger windows, mood lighting and the latest inflight entertainment. Return fares start from £499 for World Traveller, £773 for World Traveller Plus and £1,799 for Club World. 

Robert Williams, Head of Sales for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, said:  

“It’s exciting to be flying between Islamabad and Heathrow from next year, which we believe will be particularly popular with the British Pakistani community who want to visit, or be visited by, their relatives. On the route, customers will enjoy the very best in flying. Not only is it being operated on our newest long-haul aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, but it will also be landing in to the new airport in Islamabad, which opened earlier this year.”

The launch of direct flights by British Airways between London Heathrow and Islamabad’s new International Airport is excellent news for both countries. The links between Britain and Pakistan are already extraordinary – from culture and cricket, to people, politics and education.  I see this launch as a vote of confidence in the future of those links – and, of course, a reflection of the great improvements in the security situation in Pakistan in recent years. The return of British Airways will give a particular boost to our growing trade and investment links.  British Airways itself joins an increasing number of British companies doing business in Pakistan.  I hope too that it will allow more people from the UK to discover, like I have, what a beautiful country Pakistan is.   I look forward to using the service myself when flight start in June.” 

Islamabad is a quiet and tranquil city with plenty of green spaces, gardens and parks. It is a hub for culture with a rich heritage and has an impressive collection of museums, markets, Mosques and hiking trails, as well as restaurants which serve a variety of cuisines from local Pakistani dishes to food from around the world. The airline has a long history of flying to the city and offered its first scheduled flights between London and the Pakistani capital in 1976. 

Islamabad is one of four long-haul routes being launched by British Airways in 2019, its centenary year. The airline is also launching direct flights to Pittsburgh and Charleston in the US and Osaka in Japan, alongside several short-haul routes. 

British Airways’ long-haul flights include complimentary food and drink, online check-in and free seat selection 24 hours prior to departure. The airline is amid a £4.5 billion investment for customers, including the installation of the best quality WiFi and power in every seat, fitting 128 long-haul aircraft with new interiors and taking delivery of 72 new aircraft. Next year, the airline will launch its new business class seat with direct aisle access.

Timetable 

According to the Independent, big companies will be given large tax cuts to attract them to set up their businesses in Britain if Brexit takes place without a deal. Corporation tax could be reduced as much as 10% in an attempt from the UK to become more competitive and see its economy through the process of leaving the EU.

However, there are also more negative consequences on how a no-deal Brexit will impact Business growth in the UK. For example, Brexit without a deal would result in complications and greater time expenditure for UK companies to export their goods to the EU. As well as import and exporting costs between the two regions increasing, the delays in moving merchandise across would mean a loss in sales for the companies as well.

Brexit without a deal will impact small and medium-sized businesses more specifically, as just 6% of SMEs said that the Government was taking their concerns about Brexit seriously. For these types of owner managed businesses, 38% per cent said that the introduction of trade tariffs was their largest worry. A total of 30% of SMEs also said they feared a loss of EU labour and 23% are anxious about the loss of European customers.

Overall, Brexit is predicted to cause lower levels of capital investment, smaller levels of business growth and less access to external finance. Therefore, the prospect of home companies increasing their business links across UK borders will also be reduced.

Dr Ross Brown, who conducted a study at the University of St Andrews, also discovered that SMEs, in particular, will suffer lower levels of capital finance, internalisation and business development as a result of Brexit.

“Most worryingly, these perceived negative impacts appear to be foremost in the minds of entrepreneurs and managers located in the types of innovative and export-oriented companies, which are often viewed as the high growth ‘superstars’ of tomorrow… In other words, SMEs thought to be the most significant for boosting productivity and economic growth may be the most negatively affected by Brexit” said Brown.

It is yet unclear whether the impasse on Brexit negotiations will be resolved between the UK and EU, and a deal put forward that will better increase the chances of local SMEs prospering in the business world.

If you eventually decide to sell the organisation that you have nurtured, parting ways with it and moving on to a new project can be even more difficult, for a number of reasons.

Why sell up?

There are two main categories to consider when thinking about why you might sell your business; internal pressures and external factors.

External factors can include things like personal debt, which is continuing to climb at the moment, ill health that impacts you or a family member without warning and economic influences which make you doubt the long-term viability of your business.

Internal pressures might include a desire to achieve a better work-life balance, rather than being a slave to your organisation for every waking hour of the day. You might simply have stopped taking any pleasure from stewarding your business or decided that now is the time to capitalise on all of your hard work by selling up and enjoying that much-deserved payday.

In a lot of cases, there is a purely emotional motivation behind the decision to sell, whether it comes from a personal place or whether it is a reflection of a gut feeling about the timing of this move.

Who do you need on your side?

There are a lot of people you need to have in your corner to support and facilitate the sale of a business, especially if this is your first time taking on such a project. It is unwise and ultimately impossible to do everything yourself, so with the right team on tap, you can avoid common pitfalls.

At a minimum, an accountant will need to participate in the process, with a dedicated financier often involved in transactions that include a variety of different assets, rather than cash alone. A business sale agent can be an important influence, giving you the guidance you need when you encounter an issue and smoothing out any rough edges as things progress. A lawyer should be on hand to tackle the complex legal processes that underpin a transaction of this magnitude. Finally, a tax advisor will see you in good stead in terms of determining how much tax, if any, you need to pay when selling a business.

What is your business worth?

The value of a business is a mixture of objective fact and subjective opinion. Your assets, including equipment, stock and furnishings, have a fixed value, as you might expect. However, a buyer may be more eager to commit to a deal if these assets are easier to liquefy and convert into cash. The profitability is clearly a tangible measure of the firm’s success but will do more to enhance its subjective value, with the goodwill of prospective buyers needing to be courted at this point to raise the price.

Each buyer is a different prospect and comes with their own unique outlook on your business, so it is a case of finding the best way to show them that it is worth more than the raw value of its assets.

 What pre-sale preparations are necessary?

Most of the hard work involved in preparing to sell your business comes down to paperwork, which is where the team you have assembled around you will come into play. You need to get all of your accounts in order and have a minimum of three years of archived information on hand. You will also have to muster up in-depth information covering everything from employee contracts and pensions to insurance policies, software licensing, property documentation and more besides.

One thing that you should not overlook at this point is the necessity of preparing a suitable reason for selling which you can give to buyers. This will obviously need to be marketable as well as genuine, or else you might put them off or drive down the offer price accidentally.

How can I market my business effectively?

Hopefully, if you run a commercial organisation, then you have a few ideas about what goes into a successful sales pitch.
