South Asian communities urged to be aware of symptoms of lung cancer, lung disease and heart disease – all leading causes of death in England

• Public Health England launches its first national campaign to raise awareness of symptoms of lung cancer, lung disease and heart disease

• Coronary heart disease (CHD) is more common in South Asian people, as is the risk of dying early from CHD

• The main lifestyle risk factor for both lung cancer and some other diseases is smoking. There is a higher prevalence of smoking amongst Bangladeshi and Pakistani men compared with the general population

• A new film aimed at South Asians has been released. The film encourages anyone with a persistent cough, or who gets out of breath doing things that they used to be able to do, to visit their GP as it could be a sign of one of these conditions http://po.st/FTSYVt

• Finding these conditions early makes them more treatable, so early diagnosis is crucial

Public Health England has launched a new nationwide ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign with the aim of raising awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer, other lung disease, and heart disease – all leading causes of death in England.
